Little Miss Muffet’s Monster-Sitting Service

City Parks Foundation recently announces the premiere of a whimsical new theater piece for the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre based on the beloved nursery rhyme, “Little Miss Muffet.”

Little Miss Muffet’s Monster-Sitting Service tells the story of Molly Muffet (the great-great-great-great granddaughter of the original, “Little Miss Muffet”) and what happens when she ends up home alone while her parents leave for a high school reunion. Molly’s grandfather is called in to babysit but gets stranded by a snowstorm in Alaska. As a last resort, he calls in an old family friend, Aloisius Albrecht Alviss Spider (Al for short), the original spider from the famed nursery rhyme. Molly and Al quickly become friends and hatch a plan to start a baby-sitting service for baby monsters while her parents are away.

As the night progresses and baby monsters get dropped off, Molly and Al receive news that the storm of the century is heading their way. Molly, Al and the babies bunker down for what promises to be a long night filled with music, song, dance and numerous surprises.

Second Annual National Kids to Parks Day

Children nationwide will take part in a growing grassroots movement to celebrate America’s parks through play on Saturday, May 19, as they participate in National Park Trust’s (NPT) Second Annual National Kids to Parks Day, a program to encourage families to enjoy the outdoors, the natural beauty and adventure in the parks.

“National Kids to Parks Day encourages children across America to get out and play. This simple idea of playing in a park can potentially give millions of kids the reason to get active and get outside just as families prepare for summer,” said Grace Lee, executive director of National Park Trust. “In one year, participation has tripled with children, families, educators, and politicians jumping in to support parks and come together in joyful and active outdoor fun. We hope that by playing in parks the next generation will be empowered to protect and preserve our parks.”

National Geographic Kids have also partnered with parks day with information on the kids.nationalgeographic.com website and on the National Geographic Parks app.

Families can join the fun and sign up online at NPT’s web site www.kidstoparks.org.

MacHomer: The Simpsons Do MacBeth

Two cultural icons are coming together for one night in MacHomer: The Simpons Do MacBeth. Bridging the gap between cartoon fun and theatrical greatness, actor Rick Miller manages to turn Macbeth into a hilarious romp with more than 50 characters from the lengendary animated show in a hilarious series of impersonations. True Shakespeareans will marvel at the way humor is highlighted throughout the original script which remains about 85% Shakespeare. And those who come more for the laughs are sure to see Shakespeare in a whole new light as well as appreciate the irony in tragic Homer’s portrayal of the Thane of Cawdor.

Rick Miller of MacHomer and Bigger Than Jesus is a veritable tour-de-force in the international theater scene, having created, starred in and otherwise supported dozens of productions in Canada and abroad. He has also hosted ABC’s Just For Laughs, been named one of the Most Creative People Alive by Entertainment Weekly.
